Malaysia issues warning alert on heavy rainfall

KUALA LUMPUR (AA) - Malaysia issued a weather warning alert on Monday against heavy rainfall in several districts, according to local media.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a single-day yellow category alert for Malaysia's southern Johor, eastern Pahang and Terengganu states, and another for two days in Sabah, a Malaysian state located on the island of Borneo, local news agency Bernama reported.

The heavy rains have resulted in floods in nine districts in Johor as well as two districts in Pahang.

As of 1.00 p.m. local time (0500GMT) on Monday, 9,435 people from 2,258 families had been evacuated after floods hit Johor, while 1,074 residents had been placed in safe areas in Pahang as of noon.

Authorities warned rainfall and floods would continue in the region and could cause seawater to overflow into estuaries and coastal areas.
