ANKARA (AA) - A Malaysian citizen in Singapore has been given a 16-month jail term for stealing thousands of chickens from a company he was employed at in the island city-state, local media reported.

The 33-year-old convict, Au Yong Seh Ennm, was as an operations manager at Hy-Fresh Industries, a chicken distribution company, according to Malay Mail newspaper. The firm distributes both fresh and frozen chickens.

He stole more than 10,000 whole chickens as well as five cartons of chicken wings amounting to over $21,000.

The case was filed against Au Yong after the management found major discrepancies in the stock figures for September, October and November last year. He was arrested in January this year.

The newspaper quoted a public prosecutor as saying that the convict used the earnings from the loot sale of chickens to settle his gambling debts and repay loans, among other things.

The southeast asian country's poultry industry is the most advanced among the Malaysian livestock sector, with a highly commercialized and integrated production system.
