ISTANBUL (AA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a virtual meeting on Friday with Elon Musk to discuss technology investments in the Southeast Asian nation.

The two discussed electric automaker Tesla’s future operations in Malaysia, read a brief statement on Anwar’s Twitter.

Welcoming Musk’s investments in Malaysia, Anwar said: “We discussed SpaceX’s participation with the Starlink satellite service, which can contribute to faster and wider internet coverage.”

The Southeast Asian nation has a “comprehensive plan and ecosystem, as well as competitive resources to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility,” said the prime minister.

Earlier this year, Malaysia’s Investment Ministry said that Tesla would establish its first Malaysia office in western Selangor state.

“Malaysia will continue to strengthen its commitment to net zero carbon emissions as early as 2050,” said Anwar, pointing to the use of electric cars in the country.

On increasing internet penetration in the rural areas, Anwar said it will “improve the ability and well-being of the people, especially from the aspect of education and the potential of agricultural technology and income generation.”
