Malta vetoes spending for EU’s Libya mission

Maltese government to inform EU it will no longer provide team to Operation Irini, according to local media reports

ANKARA (AA) - Malta has formally given notice to the EU that it will no longer commit any military assets to Operation Irini, a naval mission launched by the EU to enforce an arms embargo on Libya, local media reported on Friday.

Speaking to a local newspaper -- Times of Malta -- a senior government source said Malta would also be using its veto to block the planned extension of the operation.

The decision was partly motivated by the migration crisis in the Mediterranean, the source said, and also added that Malta would also block the planned extension of Operation Irini through the use of further military vessels.

Arrivals of migrants in Malta have increased in 2020, with around 1,135 people entering as of March 18, compared to 136 at this point in 2019.

EU member states approved last month the launch of Operation Irini, which aimed at enforcing the U.N. arms embargo on Libya.

However, EU’s new military mission has been controversial and faced several criticisms.

Several member states argued that the EU’s renewed naval presence would encourage illegal migration across the Mediterranean, at its vessels could be used to rescue migrants.

The mission was also criticized for being ineffective as it would not be able to stop transfer of arms from Egypt or UAE to the Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar.

The Libyan government has been under attack by Haftar’s forces since April 2019, with more than 1,000 killed in the violence. It launched Operation Peace Storm on March 26 to counter attacks on the capital.

Following the ouster of late ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya's government was founded in 2015 under a UN-led political deal.
