Marc Marquez to miss Spanish MotoGP due to injury

30-year-old Spaniard to be replaced by his compatriot Iker Lecuona of Team HRC

ISTANBUL (AA) - Marc Marquez will not be able to race in the Spanish MotoGP due to a hand injury, MotoGP confirmed on Wednesday.

"Yesterday we did another CT scan and it has been confirmed that, despite the fact that the injury is progressing favourably, the bone has not yet finished healing and racing in Jerez was risky. Together with the medical team, we decided not to take any risks, to wait two more weeks and return in Le Mans," Marquez said in a statement.

The Gran Premio MotoGP in Spain's Jerez will be run on April 30.

MotoGP said in a statement that Iker Lecuona of Team HRC in WorldSBK would replace him for the upcoming race, adding that Marquez is aiming to return to grid at next month's French Grand Prix.

Last month, Marquez suffered a hand injury in the season-opening Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao after a collision with favorite Miguel Oliveira.

The 30-year-old Spaniard won the MotoGP world titles in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The six-time MotoGP winner also missed the Argentina GP and Americas GP due to the same injury.
