Mauritania resumes Internet services after 10-days cut

Internet services were suspended as protests and riots broke out on June 23 after announcement of polls’ initial results

NOUAKCHOTT (AA) - Mauritanian authorities have allowed the resumption of Internet services after shutting it down for 10 days.

‫On June 23, the authorities in the country cut down the Internet services as protests and riot broke out following the announcement the presidential polls’ initial results which showed the ruling party’s candidate as the winner.

On June 28, the authorities allowed a partial resumption of the Internet in the country before allowing the entire resumption of it on Wednesday evening.

Cutting down the internet service following the announcement of polls’ initial results, was a "precautionary measure for security reasons," the authorities had said.

Mauritania’s ruling party’s candidate is the winner of last month’s presidential elections, the nation’s Constitutional Council announced on Monday.

Former Defense Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazouani won 52% of the June 22 vote in the West African country, according to the council.
