Moroccans rally against pension reform law

Labor unions have warned that the law will damage workers' rights

By Khalid Majdoub

RABAT (AA) - Hundreds of civil servants took to the streets in Moroccan capital Rabat on Sunday to protest a pension reform bill recently approved by parliament.

On Wednesday, the parliament gave a final approval to the bill, which increases the retirement age to 63 from 60 by 2022.

Labor unions have warned that the law will damage workers' rights.

“Civil servants reject the passage of this law,” Idris Ada, a member of the national coordinating committee for voting down pension plan, which called Sunday’s rally, told Anadolu Agency.

“[This law] will add more burdens on the employees,” he said.

The government has said the pension reform will cost 41 billion dirhams ($4.1 billion) over the next five years, and any delay will add more to the burden.
