Morocco’s Agadir shaken by 4.5-magnitude earthquake

Three-second tremor causes no casualties or material damage

By Anas Mazour

RABAT, Morocco (AA) - An earthquake measuring 4.5 degrees on the Richter scale shook the outskirts of Morocco’s southern touristic city of Agadir on Monday leaving no casualties or material damage.

The quake, which lasted for roughly three seconds, was reportedly felt by residents of Agadir’s Chtouka Ait Baha region.

The government-run National Institute of Geophysics issued a statement putting the earthquake’s epicenter in the region’s Ait Amira area.

According to local media, residents of the area vacated their homes Monday morning after feeling the tremors, recalling a 1960 earthquake in Agadir that destroyed a number of buildings.

In 2014, Agadir was hit by a similar low-intensity earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale.
