World no. 1 topples Nick Kyrgios from Australia to advance to quarterfinals

ANKARA (AA) - Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal Monday qualified for the quarterfinals at the 2020 Australian Open.

World number one Nadal beat Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios with the sets of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 in three hours and 38 minutes.

With this victory, Nadal, 33, moved into the quarterfinals at the tournament.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios paid tribute to Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant who was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, wearing his jersey while warming up.

On Bryant's sudden death, Nadal also said American legend had been a true inspiration for the world and he will be in people's hearts.

"I woke up this morning with this terrible news and super sad. He had been one of the greatest sportsmen in history and he deserves a big round of applause," he added.

- Former champ Wawrinka eliminates 4th seed Medvedev

Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka, 34, defeated Daniil Medvedev in men's fourth round with the sets of 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

World number four Medvedev had to return home after Wawrinka defeat.

Dominic Thiem from Austria beat French player Gael Monfils with the sets of 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals for the first time.

Seventh seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Russian Andrey Rublev.

- Simona Halep qualify for quarterfinals

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep booked her ticket for quarterfinals after a two-set victory.

The world number four eliminated Elise Mertens from Belgium with the sets of 6-4, 6-4.

Estonia's Anett Kontaveit beat Poland's Iga Swiatek 2-1 as Russian player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated the 2016 winner Angelique Kerber with the same score to qualify for the upcoming round.

The former French Open and Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza beat Dutch player Kiki Bertens 2-0 to book her place for the quarterfinals.

The 108th edition of the Australian Open will run from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2.
