Namibia not to renew politicians’ cars for 5 years

President orders vehicle fleet of government not be renewed for period 2020-2025 to help fund coronavirus fight

ABUJA, Nigeria (AA) – Namibia’s government on Thursday announced a five-year ban on buying new cars for senior politicians and government officials to help them fund fight on novel coronavirus.
Presidential spokesperson Alfredo Hengari said: “[The president] has directed that the vehicle fleet of the Namibian government will not be renewed for the period 2020-2025," according to Eyewitness News, a South African multi-platform news publisher.
“No new vehicles will be purchased for members of the executive and public office bearers in the Namibian government,” Hengari added.
Namibia has 16 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, with no deaths, and 12 recoveries.

After originating in China last December, COVID-19, disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit.
The pandemic has killed nearly 302,500 people worldwide, with more than 4.44 million confirmed cases, while recoveries have surpassed 1.58 million, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University of the US.
