Nasdaq closes higher, Dow, S&P 500 end in negative territory

ANKARA (AA) - The Nasdaq closed higher Friday but the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 finished the last trading day of the week in negative territory.

The Dow plummeted 269 points, or 0.75%, at 35,602. The blue-chip index fell 1.38% for the week

The S&P 500 lost 6 points, or 0.14%, to close the day at 4,698. It managed to have a weekly gain of 0.32%

The Nasdaq added 63 points, or 0.4%, to finish the session at 16,057 before hitting an all-time high of 16,121.12 points. The tech-heavy index increased 1.23% for the week.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was up 1.82% to 17.91. The dollar index gained 0.51% to 96.03.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes, however, fell 2.9% to 1.541%.

Oil prices were down around 3.5% with international benchmark Brent crude trading at $78.44 a barrel and the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $75.69.

Precious metals were down slightly, with gold losing 0.63% to $1,847 an ounce and silver shedding 0.85% to $24.59.
