Nationwide rallies call for full civilian rule in Sudan

Protesters chanting anti-military slogans urge end to military's role in transitional government

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Massive rallies in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other cities on Thursday called for a full civilian rule in the country.

Thousands of protesters in Khartoum, Medani, Atbara, and other cities took to the streets, calling for an end to the partnership between the civilian and military components in the transitional government since August 2019.

The protesters raised anti-military slogans and banners, condemning last week's military coup attempt.

They also called for dismantling the “deep state,” saying that it still defends the interests of the old regime comprising the associates of former President Omar Al-Bashir.

The protesters also demanded the chairmanship of the sovereign council to be handed over to the civilians in line with the constitutional declaration inked in 2019.

They also demanded the handover of Bashir and other former officials accused of committing crimes in the Darfur region to the International Criminal Court, formation of the transitional legislative assembly, and bringing those involved in the June 3, 2019 massacre in front of the army headquarters in Khartoum to justice.

The Sudanese army announced foiling a military coup last week, but the issue created a rift between the civilian and the military components within the transitional government.
