NATO officially invites Finland, Sweden to become members of alliance

Member countries agree to sign accession protocols of Nordic nations after 4-way talks between Türkiye, NATO, Finland, Sweden

MADRID (AA) - NATO on Wednesday officially invited Finland and Sweden to become members of the alliance.

The announcement came as part of the Madrid summit declaration following the meeting of NATO heads of state and government.

"Today, we have decided to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO, and agreed to sign the Accession Protocols," the NATO members said. "In any accession to the Alliance, it is of vital importance that the legitimate security concerns of all Allies are properly addressed."

It also "welcomed the conclusion of the trilateral memorandum" between Türkiye, Finland, and Sweden.

"The accession of Finland and Sweden will make them safer, NATO stronger, and the Euro-Atlantic area more secure," the declaration said.

Here are the other decisions by the heads of NATO member states:

- The alliance endorsed a new Strategic Concept that reaffirms the responsibility of ensuring its collective defense.

- Russia has been described as the "most significant and direct threat" to allies' security, peace, and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area.

- Jointly with Ukraine, NATO decided on a strengthened package of support, accelerating the delivery of non-lethal defense equipment and modernizing Kyiv's defense sector.

- Allies recognized that they face "systemic competition" from those, including China, who challenge "the alliance's interests and security, seek to undermine rules-based international order."

- NATO decided to establish Defense Innovation Accelerator to bolster the alliance's technological edge.

- A goal to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions by NATO political, military structures, and facilities while maintaining operational, military, and cost-effectiveness has been set.
