Nearly 60,000 hectares of land cleared of mines, ammunition since November 2020: Azerbaijan

44 people have died since 2nd Karabakh War in mine explosions, says Azerbaijan's Mine Action Agency (ANAMA)

ISTANBUL (AA) – Azerbaijan announced on Thursday that nearly 60,000 hectares of land in the Karabakh region has been cleared of mines and ammunition since the cease-fire was declared in November 2020.

"Since November 10, 2020, 59,055 hectares of land have been cleared in the liberated territory of Azerbaijan, 76,810 mines and unexploded ordnance have been neutralized," said Vugar Suleymanov, chairman of Azerbaijan’s Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), in a statement.

Suleymanov added that 13,211 of the neutralized mines were anti-tank mines, while 26,899 of them anti-personnel mines. The remaining 36,700 material is unexploded ordnance, he said.

"Unfortunately, since the Second Karabakh War, a total of 268 people have been victims of mines, and 44 of them died," Suleymanov further said.

ANAMA announced early this month that 2,301 unexploded ordnance laid by Armenia were neutralized in the liberated areas of Karabakh over the course of October.

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

As new clashes erupted in September 2020, a 44-day conflict saw Azerbaijan liberate several cities and over 300 settlements and villages that were occupied by Armenia for almost 30 years.

A tripartite agreement was brokered by Russia to bring an end to the war in November 2020.

The cease-fire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces withdrew in line with the agreement.
