New Israeli ambassador to Jordan arrives in Amman

Amman embassy was closed for 10 months after Israeli security guard killed two Jordanians last summer

JERUSALEM (AA) - Israel’s new ambassador to Jordan arrived in Amman on Monday to officially take up his post at the embassy, which recently reopened after a 10-month hiatus.

“Newly-appointed Israeli ambassador to Jordan Amir Weissbrod just landed in Amman,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon tweeted on Monday.

Late last month, Jordan announced its readiness to receive Weissbrod after Israel’s Foreign Ministry named him as new ambassador in February.

Israel’s embassy in Amman is currently in the process of gradually reopening after having been closed in July of last year after two Jordanians were killed by an Israeli security guard affiliated with the embassy.

Last month, Israel agreed to compensate the victims' families and prosecute the security guard for the killings, paving the way for the embassy's reopening and the return of the ambassador.

After the killings, Jordan had demanded that Israel replace its then ambassador, Einat Schlein.
