BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Serbia's former prime minister Aleksandar Vucic became the country's new president after taking an oath in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Vucic addressed citizens gathered in front of the assembly building before entering for the oath-taking ceremony.

"It is [...] important for Serbia not to be humiliated and that people in our country have peace and tranquility," said Vucic in a speech after taking the oath.

He added that he will keep the integrity of Serbia, but always accept talks with Kosovo Albanians.

Vucic also said that he wanted to improve relations with Croatia and promote cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia, as well as Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

Opposition parties held a rally Wednesday against the new president in the center of Belgrade.

Vucic then participated in a hand-over ceremony at the Presidency with his predecessor Tomislav Nikolic.

He was elected with 55.08 percent of the vote on April 2.
