Nigeria does not have spike in corona infections: CDC

‘We really haven’t seen a spike in our national data,’ says Nigeria Centers for Disease Control chief

ANKARA (AA) - Nigeria’s health authorities said the country is not experiencing a spike in coronavirus cases, according to a report Thursday.

“For over two months we fought between a hundred to two hundred cases a day… but we really haven’t seen a spike in our national data,” Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Chikwe Ihekweazu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“There has been a recent increase in a few cases in Lagos, mostly among the younger people, younger populations, and we are monitoring that very closely,” Ihekweazu said.

“If you look at our testing numbers, yes they have not gone up as high as we would have loved to, but apart from a small decrease during the peak of the demonstrations a few weeks ago, we have managed to maintain our testing numbers of about 30,000 tests per week,” he said.

Since March, the NCDC confirmed 1,163 deaths and 65,693 infections nationwide, with 61,457 being discharged.

Worldwide, the death toll from the virus stands at more than 1.3 million in 191 countries since it was first detected in Wuhan, China in late December 2019.

The number of infections stands at more than 56.4 million, according to US-based John Hopkins University.
