Nigeria: Opposition protests presidential poll results

Election results don't represent people's wish, says opposition party chairman

By Rafiu Ajakaye

LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - Nigeria's leading opposition party stormed the headquarters of country's electoral body on Tuesday, condemning the outcome of the recent presidential and parliamentary polls.

“We insist that the results of the election did not represent the wishes of the people,” Uche Secondus, People's Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, said at the Abuja office of the commission.

Secondus led thousands of party supporters on the rally during which the party formally registered its displeasure over the polls.

The party also criticized the deployment of soldiers for the elections, saying the action was unlawful and designed to muscle the opposition -- a claim the ruling All Progressive Congress denied.

Also on Tuesday, the PDP filed a petition at the election petition tribunal to challenge the results which the party insisted were fraudulent.

Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari won the election with over three million margin, beating PDP's Atiku Abubakar to a distant second place.
