No deal in Brexit talks an option: UK's May

Leaders of Conservative, Labour parties express views on TV ahead of June 8 election

LONDON (AA) – “No deal is better than a bad deal” in Brexit talks with the EU, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday, ahead of the June 8 snap election.

May told Sky network she would pursue a fair settlement with the EU regarding the financial commitments the U.K. will face before leaving the union.

The conservative leader called for the snap election as an expression of full public support for the new government that will begin the Brexit negotiations on June 19.

Latest polls suggest a five point advantage for her party over Labour led by Jeremy Corbyn, who was also interviewed separately during the same program.

May said she would be ready to walk away from the table without a deal in case a deal cannot be finalized. “No deal is better than a bad deal,” she said.

Corbyn said his government would start the upcoming negotiations with “respect” to the EU.

“We will make sure there is a deal. We won’t start the negotiations by megaphone diplomacy and threatening Europe with some sort of offshore tax haven on the shores of Europe,” Corbyn said.
