'No information' on al-Qaeda chief Zawahiri's presence in Afghanistan, Taliban say

Interim administration accuses US of violating Doha agreement, warns of causes in case of further attacks

By Islamuddin Sajid

ISLAMABAD (AA) - The Taliban said on Thursday they have no knowledge of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri's presence in Kabul, days after the US announced his killing in a drone strike in Kabul.

Noting that the US strike on Sunday hit a residential house in the capital, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban administration spokesman, said in a statement: "Two days later, US President Joe Biden claimed that US troops had targeted Al-Qaeda leader Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri in this attack. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has no information about Ayman al-Zawahiri's arrival and stay in Kabul."

A "comprehensive" investigation has been launched into the incident, the statement added.

This was the first precision drone strike officially acknowledged by the US in the war-torn country since the withdrawal of foreign forces last August under the Doha agreement between Washington and the Taliban.

Mujahid said there is "no threat to any country, including America, from the soil of Afghanistan," stressing they want to implement the Doha agreement, and its violation must end.

He said the US had "invaded our territory and violated all international principles, we strongly condemn the action once again," warning that if such an attack repeated, Washington would be responsible for the consequences.

Both the Taliban and US have accused each other of breaching the agreement signed in February 2020, with Washington saying that by "hosting and sheltering" al-Zawahiri Kabul had "grossly violated" the accord.

US President Joe Biden says the strike was a "clear demonstration" of American resolve to carry out its fight against al-Qaeda.

A senior Biden administration official claimed the US strike targeted a safe house in the Shirpur area of Kabul, to which Zawahiri, his wife, daughter, and grandchildren had relocated earlier this year.

The Doha agreement requires the non-use of Afghan territory against any other country, while respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Afghanistan.
