Nobel-winning Yazidi says Baghdadi death not enough

Nadia Murad, former Daesh/ISIS sex slave, says thousands of extremists ready to take Baghdadi’s place

UNITED NATIONS (AA) - Nobel Prize-winner and Yazidi activist Nadia Murad welcomed the death of Daesh/ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, but warned Wednesday there are “thousands” of hardline militants ready to replace him.

Speaking with reporters at the United Nations, Murad, a survivor of sexual slavery at the hands of Daesh/ISIS, called for ongoing efforts to wipe out the extremists and to secure justice for those who created the so-called caliphate.

“We don’t want to just see ISIS [members] like Baghdadi just get killed, we want to see justice,” Murad said in English, using another name for Daesh. “There’s thousands of ISIS, they joined al-Baghdadi and they continue to do what he did.”

Al-Baghdadi was killed after detonating his suicide vest in a night-time American military operation in northwest Syria, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday. It remains unclear who will take over as IS commander.

“This is just Baghdadi and how about all these [other] ISIS,” members, said Murad.

“How about all those who raped us, sold us, they still have our girls, they still have our children,” she said. “There [are] thousands of ISIS, like Baghdadi, and they are ready to do what he did and they already did and they are not giving up. So we want to see more and we want to see justice.”

The terror group rampaged through Sinjar, in northern Iraq, in 2014, slaughtering men and boys and turning thousands of women and girls from the Yazidi minority religious group into sex slaves, in what the UN has dubbed a genocide.

Murad, who was kidnapped with her sisters, several nieces and friends, was held in Mosul, Iraq, where she was abused and tortured before managing to escape.

Daesh/ISIS fighters also butchered her mother, six brothers and other relatives.
