Northern Cyprus: Talks fail to form new government

National Unity Party head Ersan Saner could not win support of at least 26 lawmakers to form government

By Muhammet Ikbal Arslan

LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (AA) – National Unity Party head Ersan Saner has failed to form a government in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the country's president said Saturday.

Saner returned the rein of the government to President Ersin Tatar, who expressed urgency at the task ahead.

“The assembly and lawmakers exist to serve the nation,” Tatar noted, adding that the budget should be discussed in the assembly and passed before the new year.

Saner, for his part, said he held talks with all parties represented in the assembly, however, could not reach the required majority to form a government. He was given the task two weeks ago.

Tatar is expected to assign Republican Turkish Party head Tufan Erhurman to lead the talks for forming the government.

The support of 26 deputies is required for the establishment of a government in the TRNC’s Assembly of the Republic, which consists of 50 seats.
