ISTANBUL (AA) - The secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said Tuesday that he wishes Tunisia to return to stability and peace with a rapid transition from the current phase.

Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen held a phone call with Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi on the latest developments in the country, according to a statement by the OIC.

During the conversation, Al-Othaimeen emphasized the importance that the OIC gives to Tunisia's stability and security and its full support for the Tunisian people.

"Al-Othaimeen also hailed the country’s effective role in and constructive contribution to the OIC mandate, stating that he looks forward to greater prospects for stronger bilateral cooperation in areas of interest to the OIC, Tunisia and its genuinely kindhearted people," the statement added.

On Sunday, Tunisian President Kais Saied dismissed the government of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, froze parliament and assumed executive authority with the assistance of a new prime minister.

The move was rejected by most of Tunisia’s parliamentary blocs, including Ennahda, Heart of Tunisia, the Dignity Coalition and the People's Movement.

Following Saied’s decisions, Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi described the president's move as nothing but a "full-fledged coup" against the Tunisian constitution, revolution and freedoms in the country.

Tunisia is seen as the only country that succeeded in carrying out a democratic transition among a group of Arab countries that witnessed popular revolutions which toppled their ruling regimes, including Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
