Olympic Games could be ‘big failure,' Rio governor warns

Economic, security concerns major obstacles to smooth operation during games

SANTIAGO, Chile (AA) – The Olympic Games in Brazil could be a “big failure”, Gov. Francisco Dornelles of Rio de Janeiro said in an interview published Monday.

Security and mobility are big worries ahead of the games that are scheduled to begin Aug. 5, according to Dornelles, who spoke to the local O Globo newspaper.

The state is still waiting for $860 million from the federal government, he said. That money is supposed to be used to support the state treasury before the games.

The governor warned of major looming problems that could jeopardize safety and security of the 17 days of competition, including the readiness of the city’s metro line that will transport tourists to the main Olympic venue in western Rio and the insufficient funds for gasoline. Dornelles said there is not enough money for gas for police to continue patrols through the end of this week.

“I’m optimistic about the games, but I have to show the reality. We can make great Olympic Games, but if some steps are not taken, it could be a big mistake. Without security, or metro, there will be difficulties,” he said.

With some of the highest crime rates in Brazil, security in Rio is a major concern for authorities.

“How could people feel protected in the city without security?” he said. “We must give proof that we are equipping security and that mobility is ready for people who come to the country,” he added.

Economic and security concerns aside, Brazil’s political instability could also affect the games.

Dilma Rousseff was suspended from office last month and leadership of the country is in the hands of interim President Michel Temer.

Rousseff is accused of violating fiscal rules to mask budget issues leading up to the 2014 presidential elections. Temer is also under investigation.

The country’s sports minister resigned just four months before the start of the games.
