Opposition bloc calls for forming national salvation gov’t in Tunisia

Tunisia has been in deep political crisis since last year

By Adel Thabeti
TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) – A main opposition bloc has called for the formation of a national salvation government to address Tunisia’s economic and social problems.

In a statement on Sunday, the National Salvation Front accused the government of failing to provide basic commodities to the citizens.

“The coup regime does not have any economic policy but to hike prices and freeze employment,” the front said.

The opposition bloc accused Tunisian President Kais Saied “of seeking to accumulate powers under his authority.”

The National Salvation Front consists of five parties: Ennahda Movement, Heart of Tunisia Party, the Dignity Coalition, the Movement Party and Al-Amal Party.

Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis that aggravated the country's economic conditions since last year, when Saied ousted the government and dissolved parliament.

While Saied insists that his measures were meant to "save" the country, critics have accused him of orchestrating a coup.
