Over 1,000 Congolese expelled from Angola begin arriving in DRC

Angolan President Joao Lourenco ordered illegally staying foreigners to leave country, says officer

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Over 1,000 Congolese who have been repatriated from Angola began arriving in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Tuesday following a 16-day ultimatum given by Angolan authorities to illegally staying foreigners.

Lt. Chris Muta, a security officer in Kasai province, told Anadolu Agency by phone that the returnees entered the DRC through the border city of Kamako in Kasai.

"Hundreds of Congolese have today crossed into the DRC from Angola, where they have been expelled. They were sent away from Angola following a 16-day ultimatum which was given to foreigners by the Angolan authorities," said Muta.

He said most of those returning are staying in Kamako, but due to their large numbers, living conditions are difficult.

“They have walked long distances and will spend the night in schools, churches and playgrounds," he added.

According to Gustava Kayembe, an officer with the DRC’s National Border Hygiene Program, it was Angolan President Joao Lourenco who ordered that the foreigners leave the country, so they had no alternative but to return home.

"We were shocked when the president of Angola said we had to leave. We have lost all our property, which we amassed from our sweat for many years, said Fidele Munyuni, one of the returnees.
