Over 1,000 evacuated following volcano eruption in Guatemala

Hot ash clouds can affect as many as 100,000 people in region following eruption of Fuego, according to disaster agency

ANKARA (AA) - More than 1,000 people have been evacuated in Guatemala following a new eruption of Central America’s most active volcano Fuego on Thursday.

Authorities moved 1,054 people from five communities living near Fuego to a temporary shelter, local media reported, citing the country's civil protection official Oscar Cossio.

Conred, Guatemala’s disaster agency, said that the volcano was causing potential hazards such as sending out pyroclastic flows and ashfall.

It said that hot ash clouds can affect as many as 100,000 people in the region following the eruption of Fuego.

The Fuego eruption in 2018 killed 194 people and left hundreds of people missing, many more injured and displaced.
