Pakistan, India renew nuclear safety protocols

Two sides commit to sharing information in case of nuclear accident

By Aamir Latif

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Pakistan and India have agreed to extend a safety protocol around nuclear weapons for the next five years, Pakistan’s foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.

The Risk from Accidents Relating to Nuclear Weapons deal constitutes a part of nuclear confidence-building measures previously agreed between Pakistan and India.

It provides for an immediate exchange of information between the two countries in the event of any accident relating to nuclear weapons under their control.

It first came into force in 2007 and was extended for another five years in 2012.

"Pakistan believes in the need for both sides to stay engaged for strategic stability in South Asia," the statement added.
