Pakistan: Jailed former premier shifts to hospital

Nawaz Sharif moved to Lahore hospital from Kot Lakhpat jail on doctors' advice

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AA) - Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday was shifted to a hospital from jail following a high-level medical board recommendation, local media reported.

According to broadcaster Geo News, Sharif has been shifted from Kot Lakhpat jail to Lahore's Service Hospital.

In late January, the provincial government constituted a fresh high-level medical board to examine the health condition of Sharif.

The board recommended shifting Sharif to a hospital as he suffers from diabetes, heart disease and a chronic kidney condition.

An earlier team of doctors also made the same recommendation.

His party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) expressed concern over the party supremo's health condition and alleged the government is hiding medical reports.

Sharif is currently serving a seven-year jail term in a corruption case in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore, a northeastern city of Pakistan.

He served as prime minister from 1990 to 1992, 1997 to 1999, and 2013 to 2017, unable to complete even a single five-year term.
