Pakistan reopens consulate in Afghanistan's Jalalabad

Consulate was closed following alleged interference of Afghan officials in August

By Aamir Latif

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Pakistan on Sunday announced it was reopening its consulate in the Afghan city of Jalalabad after assurance of security by the Afghan government, an official statement said.

The consulate was closed in August this year due to alleged “undue interference" of a provincial governor in functioning of diplomatic affairs.

"All visa applicants in Jalalabad and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General can now apply for visa with the Consulate General with effect from Monday Oct. 8, 2018," said a Foreign Ministry statement.

Pakistan Embassy in Kabul had accused Hayatullah Khan, the governor of northeastern Nangarhar province, of which Jalalabad is the capital, of interfering in the consulate affairs.

Kabul however had denied the charge.
