Pakistan, Turkey discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - The Turkish envoy in Islamabad met on Tuesday Pakistan's finance minister to discuss ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation in different sectors.

The meeting between Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul and Shaukat Tarin took place in Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

Tarin, according to a statement from the Finance Ministry, said Pakistan can benefit from Turkey's experience, especially in construction, agriculture and tourism.

He invited Turkish companies to take advantage of special economic zones in Pakistan, assuring full support and facilitation to Turkish investors.

Commending the "valuable" contribution of Turkish firms in the field of construction worldwide, he asked them to explore options for joint ventures and investment to increase their footprint in Pakistan.

The current government, he said, has extended a "very attractive" construction package to stimulate economic recovery amid the coronavirus pandemic, as well as in the post COVID-19 scenario.

Highlighting key areas for expanding economic collaboration between Ankara and Islamabad, the minister said Pakistan’s tourism industry can benefit from Turkish experience and make Pakistan a hub of international tourism.

"Turkey is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. Tourism revenues have a major contribution in the Turkish economy," Tarin said.

Pakistan, he said, could follow in the footsteps of Turkey for value addition in agricultural produce, particularly cotton crops to boost agricultural productivity.

Tarin suggested collaboration between the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (Agriculture Development Bank Limited) and Ziraat Bank of Turkey.

"Pakistan and Turkey enjoy close political, economic, cultural and social relations over the years. People of both the countries have deep sentiments of brotherhood for each other," he said, adding that cultural and historical affinity provides a solid foundation for further fortifying the existing bilateral trade and economic ties.

Yurdakul affirmed to continue close partnership with Pakistan in the spheres of trade and investment. He suggested that bilateral trade may be conducted in their local currencies, an idea welcomed by Tarin.
