Prime Minister Khan among 10 world leaders to promote actions to reverse climate change effects, says his office

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) – Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was chosen amongst the 10 global leaders to showcase climate action at the high level “Climate Action Summit”, said a statement from the prime minister’s office.

The summit was hosted by the UK on Saturday, which is currently the chair of the global climate negotiations process.

In his statement to the global community, Khan reiterated Pakistan's "strong and unwavering" commitment to enhanced climate action, even though his country contributes less than 1% of global emissions but remains the fifth most vulnerable nation to climate impacts.

He said that Pakistan has stepped up its climate action ambition in the energy sector by "boldly" announcing a shift away from dirty coal as he has clearly announced no new coal projects.

This, he further said, links with Pakistan’s commitment to shift 60% of its energy mix towards clean and zero-carbon energy by 2030, comprising wind, hydro and solar.

He added that the country was also poised to convert 30% new vehicles hitting the roads into electric vehicles by 2030.
