Pentathlon athlete aims to earn quota for Tokyo 2020

Ilke Ozyuksel works 8 hours everyday to make Tokoyo Olympics team

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish pentathlon athlete Ilke Ozyuksel, who participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics, is working hard make the it to the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The 23 year-old, being the first ever in her category to represent Turkey at the 2016 Games works at least eight hours to get qualified.

"I aspire to join the Olympic games. I work for eight hours minimum everyday. Normally I was not busy at weekends but nowadays I am busier and I don't take a rest," the holder of seven world records told Anadolu Agency. "We usually prepare on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other days are busy with trainings," she added.

Ozyuksel said she faced difficulties while preparing for the Rio Games.

"I was without a coach and I was about to leave sports. I also was bad at horse riding. I trained at horse riding for five hours a day. I worked hard and it was a different feeling to compete in the Olympics," she said.

Her determination has steeled her desire to medal in Tokyo where she said she will fight to make a top finish.

When asked about breaking the world record in laser-run stages at the 2019 European Modern Pentathlon Championships in England, she told that she has been trying to set this record for years.

"This was a very difficult record because the previous record holder set this record on a short track," she said.

Ozyuksel said her best score was 25 seconds. She was happy to break the record but was very upset she did not earn quota.
