ANKARA (AA) - A court in Philippines on Wednesday handed jail terms ranging from 8 to 14 years to eight coast guard members for killing a Taiwanese fisherman in 2013, local media reported.

The court in capital Manila found the coast guard officials guilty of homicide for opening fire at 65-year-old Hung Shih-cheng in 2013, daily Philippine Star reported.

It was on May 9, 2013 when Philippine coast guards had shot Hung dead some 180 nautical miles off southernmost tip of Taiwan. It is where the exclusive economic zones of the two countries overlap.

The court ordered the convicted personnel to "jointly and severally" pay the kin of the slain Taiwanese fisherman 50,000 Philippine pesos ($957) in civil guarantee and another 50,000 pesos in moral damages.

According to Focus Taiwan TV, Hung's daughter said that family is not entirely happy with the ruling but said it was acceptable.
