ERBIL, Iraq (AA) - At least two civilians were killed while two others injured in a rocket attack by the PKK terror group in northern Iraq, the region's government said on Thursday.

PKK terrorists fired two rockets on Bamarni village in Duhok province, killing two civilians and injuring two others, said the anti-terror unit of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in a statement on Facebook.

According to official figures, the PKK had occupied 515 villages on the border of Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaymaniyah in 2015.

After Turkiye's successful cross-border operations in recent years, the PKK terrorists retreated from the Turkish border into Iraq, and occupied 285 more villages in the last seven years.

In a statement on Feb. 27, 2021, KRG Prime Minister Masoud Barzani said authorities could not rebuild 800 villages because of the PKK, adding that they would not tolerate the terror group's presence in the region.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.
