Places of worship in Uganda open for vaccination against COVID-19

Leaders of various religious denominations issue joint statement urging Ugandans to observe COVID guidelines

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Religious leaders in Uganda under an umbrella organization called the Inter-Religious Council (IRC) on Monday officially allowed their places of worship to be used for COVID-19 vaccination.

Already some places of worship around the capital in Kampala have been used to vaccinate people.

Meeting at their office in Kampala, the leaders of various religious denominations also urged Ugandans to observe all of the government’s COVID-19 guidelines.

“We call upon religious leaders to use worship services, masses and kutbahs to encourage their congregations to get vaccinated…Our offer to the government remains that our worship grounds can be used for vaccination and indeed other services,” they said in a joint statement.

“We have given out our places to be used for vaccinating against COVID-19. What we have done is meant to save lives. We cannot allow people to die while we are doing nothing to save them,” said Stephen Kaziimba, the head of the Anglican Church in Uganda.
