Police killed as militia attacks Congolese city

ARU, Democratic Rep. of Congo (AA) – One policeman was killed Wednesday when a local militia group attacked a city in Central Kasai province, police told Anadolu Agency.

Several civilians were also injured in the attack by Kamuina Nsapu in Tshimbulu.

Police officer Patrick Mbwingi said the victim was killed as he tried to stop the group from attacking the city.

“They shot him dead and also injured several civilians,” Mbwingi said, adding that most residents have fled to neighboring villages and trading centers.

One local leader said the militia has taken control of Tshimbulu.

“Most of the people in the city have run away. The militiamen are moving around on the streets beating up whoever they come across,” Robert Wambulu said to Anadolu Agency.

Fighting broke out between police and Kamuina Nsapu in Tshimbulu in August. The militia managed to kill eight policemen and set fire to several building in the city before the group was repelled by the army.

The militia’s leader was also killed during fighting but the group has since staged several attacks on neighboring villages, resulting in more than 20 civilian deaths.

Eastern and central Congo have been plagued by militia groups that often attack and kill civilians and, loot property.
