Political party in Turkiye invokes 'democratic politics' amid controversial photo

HDP can't be associated with weapons, violence, says party co-chair after emergence of lawmaker's photo with PKK terrorist

ANKARA (AA) - An opposition political party in Turkiye laid emphasis on its stance with "democratic politics" on Tuesday after a controversial photo emerged showing one of its lawmakers alongside a member of the PKK terrorist organization.

"The point where the HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) stands is the ground of democratic politics. You can't associate the HDP with weapons, violence, and conflict," Pervin Buldan said during her party's parliamentary group meeting, referring to a photograph of fellow lawmaker Semra Guzel posing next to a PKK terrorist who was later killed in a Turkish military airstrike.

"Where the HDP stands is the ground of dialogue and negotiation, democratic resolution and peace," Buldan said, claiming that "lie centers" were working to "illegalize our party with slander"

"As a requirement of our promise to our people, the ground we stand on is also the ground of democratic struggle," she added, underlining the HDP's determination to stick to this path "under all circumstances."

"The HDP is a party in which those who choose to engage democratic politics struggle ... For a democratic solution, a method based on dialogue and negotiation is the only path to for social peace."

Photos of Guzel with PKK terrorist Volkan Bora were widely circulated in Turkish media last week.

Bora was neutralized in 2017 by the Turkish armed forces in Turkiye's southeastern Adiyaman province.

A report for the lifting of her immunity has been submitted to the Parliament Speaker’s Office, paving the way for her to face terrorism-related charges.

The parliament's joint committee formed by constitution and justice committee lawmakers will debate the report on Thursday.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

In a case before Turkiye's highest court, state prosecutors are also seeking the closure of the HDP and political bans for its members, saying the party is merely the public face of the PKK terror group.
