Pope Francis to attend G7 session dedicated to AI, says Italian premier

Francis' participation will mark 1st such attendance by pope in workings of G7

GENEVA (AA) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday announced that Pope Francis will attend a G7 working session on artificial intelligence (AI).

"I am honored to announce today that Pope Francis will be attending the G7 working session dedicated precisely to artificial intelligence," Meloni said in a video message posted on X.

Thanking the pontiff for accepting Italy's invitation, she said that his participation would mark the first such attendance by a pope in the workings of G7.

The prime minister said that Francis' participation would make "a decisive contribution to defining a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for artificial intelligence."

Meloni said that AI is a technology that can create "great opportunities" but also brings "huge risks, as well as inevitably affecting global balances."

The G7 meeting will be held in the southern Italian region of Puglia on June 13-15.
