President of Somalia's Puntland escapes assassination bid, 2 soldiers killed

4 more soldiers injured as vehicle part of Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni’s convoy hit by roadside bomb

By Mohammed Dhaysane

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - The president of Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland state survived unharmed after his convoy was targeted with a roadside bomb on Monday.

However, two soldiers were killed and four others injured when a vehicle part of Said Abdullahi Deni’s convoy hit a landmine near the port city of Bosaso, capital of Somalia’s northeastern Bari province, a security official told Anadolu Agency.

Deni was traveling to Bosaso for a meeting with officials to discuss election arrangements, said the official, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

He confirmed that Deni remained unhurt in the attack, which has been claimed by the al-Shabaab terrorist group.

Somalia, which is grappling with drought, terrorism and economic issues, is aiming to complete its clan-based electoral process – known as the “4.5 system” – by Feb. 25.

So far, 165 members of the 275-seat lower house have been elected, with the remaining 110 members to be elected before the deadline.

On Saturday, 10 people were killed and more than 15 others wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up in central Somalia.

The bombing came just days after at least five people, including two civilians, were killed and more than 16 others wounded in overnight attacks by al-Shabaab in the capital Mogadishu.
