By Walid Abdullah
TRIPOLI (AA) – Warplanes affiliated with Libya’s eastern government and forces loyal to military commander Khalifa Haftar targeted Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport on Monday, according to a local military source.
If confirmed, it would be the first time for pro-Haftar forces to target the facility, which represents the capital’s sole civilian airport.
Several targets inside the airport were struck in Monday’s raid, a local military source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.
An Anadolu Agency correspondent based in the area said that smoke could be seen billowing from the airport following the airstrike.
No casualties have so far been reported.
An airport official told Anadolu Agency that the facility has since been evacuated and all air traffic suspended.
