Puntland, Somaliland discuss ending deadly inter-clan fighting

Puntland vice president visits area of hostilities

By Mohammed Dhaysane

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - Leaders of Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland and semiautonomous region of Puntland held discussions to end deadly inter-clan clashes in a border area claimed by both administrations, Somaliland’s interior minister said Monday.

"Our authorities are committed to working together to restore calm in cooperation with the neighboring Puntland regional state," said Mohamed Kahin Ahmed.

He said their breakaway administration will maintain security cooperation with Puntland and continue to strengthen relations.

Officials in Puntland who spoke by phone to Anadolu Agency confirmed that at least 10 people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded in clashes that took place in the Sool and Nugal regions.

A police officer in Somaliland in the town of Las'anod described the renewed inter-clan clashes as "unfortunate and unacceptable.”

"The situation is a bit calm today. But yesterday, the fighting was deadly, and it was unfortunate that in 2022, people who are very closely related are still fighting each other over land. It is unacceptable," he said.

The clashes erupted Sunday in a disputed border area between Somaliland and Puntland, an arid region located in the country’s northeast.

According to local media, Puntland Vice President Ahmed Karaash visited the area to begin mediation efforts on how to end the clashes.
