Qatar appoints ambassador to Jordan

Action comes 2 years after diplomatic ties between Qatar and Jordan downgraded over Gulf crisis

By Ahmed Yusuf

DOHA, Qatar (AA) - Qatar announced on Thursday it has named a new ambassador to Jordan after two years of downgraded diplomatic ties triggered by the Gulf crisis, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani appointed Sheikh Saud bin Nasser bin Jassim bin Mohammed "extraordinary ambassador" to Jordan, QNA said.

In mid-July, Jordan's King Abdullah II appointed Zaid al-Lawzi, secretary general at the Foreign Ministry, Jordan's ambassador to Doha.

In June 2017, Amman downgraded diplomatic relations with Qatar over the Gulf crisis when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt all abruptly severed ties with Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorist groups.

Qatar, for its part, has vociferously denied the allegations, describing the Saudi-led embargo against it as a violation of international law.
