DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) - A Bangladeshi fisherman caught a big and rare fish on Friday with long wings from one of the country’s biggest rivers in Jamuna in the northern district of Jamalpur, according to media reports.

“The weight of the fish was 46 kilograms and it had a big wing. None recognized it,” said the Kalerkantha newspaper.

The fish was captured in the net of a local fisherman when he was fishing in the river with his boat in the Sharishabari area of the district.

Locals named it “bird fish” because of its long wings and it was uncommon to residents, according to the report.

The report said it is maybe a rare type of fish found in the Indian Ocean, citing a local fisheries office.

It was sold at the local market for Bangladeshi taka 23,000 ($274) as a large number of residents gathered to see the rare fish.

People expressed wonder about the travel of the fish to normal water, leaving a big ocean for a river.

“Maybe the fish reached the Bangladeshi river from the ocean with the flow of water,” the report said, citing a suggestion by the fisherman.
