Record high temperatures expected in Italy owing to African anticyclone

ATHENS (AA) - Record high temperatures are expected in Italy owing to an African anticyclone, dubbed Charon, reported local media on Monday.

Because of Charon, which is forecasted to last until the end of this month, the temperatures will be particularly high in the southern part of the country, public broadcaster Rainews reported.

Against this background, it said, temperatures will be around 45 C (113 F) in Sicily and the southern province of Apulia with it will be as high as 47 C in Sardinia.

Temperatures will start to drop in the northern and central regions of the country but they will still remain well above of seasonal average, it said.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry warned people not to go out, consume more liquid, drink less coffee, caffeine-containing and alcoholic beverages, and eat light meals, among other things, in the face of heatwave.
