Recovery in global air travel continued in November 2021: Trade group

Int'l demand maintains upward trend as more markets reopened, domestic traffic weakens with China's tightened travel restrictions

ANKARA (AA) - Global air travel recovery continued in November 2021, prior to the emergence of the omicron coronavirus variant, a top trade group said on Wednesday.

Measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), total demand for air travel in November last year decreased 47% from the pre-pandemic level in the same month of 2019, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in a statement.

The figure posted an uptick compared to October’s 48.9% contraction from October 2019.

While international demand sustained its steady upward trend as more markets reopened, domestic traffic weakened mainly due to strengthened travel restrictions in China.

After improving for two months in a row, the domestic air travel weakened slightly in November with RPKs falling by 24.9% versus 2019 compared to a 21.3% decline in October 2021.

International passenger demand in November dropped 60.5% from the same month in 2019, bettering the 64.8% decrease seen in October last year.

"Unfortunately, governments over-reacted to the emergence of the Omicron variant at the close of the month and resorted to the tried-and-failed methods of border closures, excessive testing of travelers and quarantine to slow the spread," said IATA head Willie Walsh.

International ticket sales in December and early January fell sharply compared to 2019, suggesting a more difficult first quarter than had been expected, Walsh warned.
