Regime raid kills 28 in Syria’s Idbli

Saturday’s attack came shortly after the U.S. and Russia announced a truce deal in Syria

IDLIB, Syria (AA) - At least 28 people were reportedly killed and scores injured by a regime airstrike Saturday in the opposition-held Idlib province in western Syria.

Regime warplanes raided a marketplace in central Idbli, killing 28 people, a civil defense source told Anadolu Agency.

“The attack left 41 people injured, including women and children,” the source added anonymously due to safety concerns.

The source expected the death toll to rise as many of the injured were in a critical condition.

Saturday’s attack came shortly after the United States and Russia announced a truce deal in war-torn Syria, which will commence with the start of the Muslim holiday celebration of Eid al-Adha on Monday.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, dubbed the deal a “turning point”, and said that along with Russia he hoped it would “reduce violence, ease suffering and resume movement towards a negotiated peace and a political transition in Syria”.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the regime of Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests.
