Russia-Ukraine war claims lives of at least 15 journalists

AFP's Arman Soldin is most recent journalist killed in 14-month war, according to Committee to Protect Journalists

ISTANBUL(AA) - More than a dozen journalists, including women, have been killed in Ukraine, most of them on the frontlines, since the war with Russia started in February last year.

The latest incident was of Agence France-Presse (AFP) video journalist Arman Soldin, who was killed in a rocket attack in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday.

Soldin was the 15th journalist to be killed in the Ukraine conflict, now in its 14th month, according to data from the Committee to Protect Journalists. Two other journalists have died in circumstances that remain unclear.

Soldin, who was of Bosnian-French background, was working with four other colleagues and Ukrainian soldiers at the time of the attack that caused his death. The other journalists remain unhurt.

Cameraman Yevhenii Sakun, 49, is killed when Russian military forces shell a TV tower in Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, in an attack that also causes the death of five others. He worked for the Ukrainian television station LIVE.


- March 5-15 2022

Freelance journalist Zoreslav Zamoysky is found dead by locals near Kyiv. The exact date of his death remains unknown. Zamoysky was documenting the war, and sharing the coverage on Facebook.

A senior cameraman for private broadcaster Sigma TV, Viktor Dedov, is killed when a shell fired allegedly by Russian forces hit his apartment building in the southeastern port city of Mariupol.


- March 11-April 7, 2022

Ukrainian journalist and blogger Oksana Haidar, 54, is killed by Russian artillery shelling her village of Shevchenkove. Also known as "Ruda Pani," Haidar's body is found on April 7, though the exact date of her death is unknown.


- March 13, 2022

American documentary filmmaker Brent Renaud is shot and killed, allegedly by Russian forces outside Kyiv.

Renaud had covered many wars in the past, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and was working on a project covering refugees in the region for Time Studios.

Ukrainian producer Oleksandra Kuvshynova and Pierre Zakrzewski, a cameraman and warzone photographer with US broadcaster Fox News, are killed in the village of Horenka when the vehicle they were traveling in is "struck by incoming fire," allegedly from Russian forces.

Journalist Oksana Baulina is killed in Kyiv while covering Russia's assault on the city. Baulina was working for an independent Latvia-based investigative news website. The Russian military increased its shelling of residential areas in Kyiv earlier in the day she was killed, according to media reports.

Documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius, 45, is killed in Mariupol. The circumstances surrounding Kvedaravicius' death remain unclear.


- April 1, 2022

Ukrainian photojournalist Maks Levin is found dead. The 40-year-old freelance photojournalist and documentary filmmaker had covered the Russia-Ukraine conflict since 2014, when Moscow annexed Crimea and the war in the Donbas region began, for various media outlets.


- April 28, 2022

Vira Hyrych, a producer for the US Congress-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Ukrainian service, is killed by Russian shelling that hit her apartment.


- May 30, 2022

Frederic Leclerc-Imhoff, 32, a cameraman with French private broadcaster BFMTV, is killed on the road in the eastern city of Luhansk.

According to media reports, Leclerc-Imhoff was reporting on a humanitarian evacuation effort when the vehicle he was in, an armored 33-tonne truck, was shelled by Russian forces.

Ukrainian producer Bohdan Bitik is shot and killed near the southern frontline city of Kherson.

Bitik was working with the Italian daily La Repubblica, alongside Italian correspondent Corrada Zunino, who was injured in the attack, allegedly by Russian snipers.
