Russia vetoes UN resolution on Syria cross-border aid delivery through Türkiye
Humanitarian mechanism allows delivery of aid to some 4 million people in Syria
By Betul Yuruk
UNITED NATIONS (AA) - Russia vetoed on Tuesday a UN Security Council resolution seeking to extend cross-border aid delivery for nine months through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing from Türkiye into Syria.
The 13 remaining Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution drafted by Switzerland and Brazil while China abstained from the vote.
Russia insists on only a six-month extension and submitted a rival resolution.
The current authorization expired on Monday.
The humanitarian mechanism allows the delivery of aid to some 4 million people in Syria.
The long-running aid operation has been in place since 2014.
