Vladimir Putin, Sebastian Kurz stress importance of providing humanitarian assistance to people of Syria

By Elena Teslova

MOSCOW (AA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz have discussed the situation in Syria over the phone, according to the Kremlin on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Kremlin said the two leaders discussed the importance of providing the humanitarian assistance to Syrian people and readiness to contribute to the resumption of the inter-Syrian talks under the UN auspices.

The two leaders said the U.S.-led airstrikes on Syria “aggravated” the situation in the country.

Putin and Kurz also discussed the realization of the bilateral agreements and the preparation for marking the 50th anniversary of the beginning of deliveries of natural gas from Russia to Austria.

On Saturday, the U.S., U.K., and France launched airstrikes on the Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

The strikes came after the Assad regime was accused of carrying out a chemical attack in Syria's Douma, which killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.
